But if we just want to double the number of *transactions* supported, naively doubling the blocksize achieves this.
The point isn't that it isn't perfect, it's that it isn't perfect and has completely outgrown the capabilities of its design and the waste required to keep using it has spiraled out of control.

That *power* isn't *required* to keep using it. It's the power that's being voluntarily put into it. Because people want to. It would operate the same scale (with same scale problems) with 1% or less the power.

Put it another way. The power that it's *attracted* is enormous and transaction fees are too high.
