Bitcoin consumes 4,000,000,000 W of power to process four transactions per second. A single Raspberry Pi with a database can do an order of magnitude more on 5W. Think about that next time you wonder if it's a good design.

The argument then becomes that all the niceties of Bitcoin over a dumb single-homed, centralized system aren't worth the ridiculous overhead. I.e. I don't care how much nicer the Ferrari is, it isn't worth one billion times the price.

It's apples vs oranges. If all you need is a database then yes, a horribly maintained blockchain is probably the wrong tool for the job. Maybe worth repeating to anybody buying into the current manic blockchain fad: This probably isn't the tool you're looking for.
