Gentoo broke the mingw cross-compilers, so I had to use msys2. wget configure takes about 15 minutes there.

because autoconf configure scripts are single-threaded, or?

M4 doesn't scale? like, at all?

Tried "emerge --jobs" yet? It'll try to compile multiple packages at the same time, if the dependency graph allows it.
-
Yes, I'm a longtime user. It helps, but only to a point. The dependency graph narrows down eventually.

How are you liking the compile times

Never quite understood why most projects use it. It’s literally simpler to just write a sensible makefile yourself. And realistically most users of autotools don’t actually bother to do anything with unexpected test results and make the compile fail. Might as well not bother.
-
having seen more than a fair share of both, it's harder to screw up autotools entirely. But if you know what you're doing, manual make would be more performant. Except very few people know what they are doing.

I wonder if it’s possible to improve autotools. Not that I’m qualified to do it.
