Dear @drupal, These are not acceptable answers to the question "what is your gender". Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Agender or non-binary folks may not consider themselves trans but they sure aren't "male" or "female". How bout you just not gather data about gender?pic.twitter.com/hoFIohCk24

Yes, this is misinformed, but they are trying. Better to ask '2-step' - ◻️gender assigned at birth & ◻️current gender ID. But people *should* collect this data, but do it the right way & include transpeople. https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/research/census-lgbt-demographics-studies/geniuss-report-sept-2014/ …

Why does Drupal, a technical organization, need to collect information about gender? Why is it a required field in order to submit a talk to a conference? How will the gender be displayed and used? Who has access to the data? What if someone is not out about their gender?

Also, my gender assigned at birth is none of your goddamned business. If a doctor wants to ask "do you require a pap smear or a colon cancer screening" that is a better question to ask than forcing me to put my assigned birth on my charts so everyone fucking calls me "ma'am"

Gender assigned at birth is a ridiculous question, that is never acceptable, and the "trans as a gender" thing is just wrong. Basic gender demographics can be useful, though. As long as the question is optional and has a catch-all ("other") for nonbinary it should be ok I think?

I mean I get the idea of not asking about gender at all, and that is ideal in an ideal world, but where gender biases or inequality exist gathering gender data can be a useful tool to combat them.

Yes. Yes. Yes!!! The only reason transcare is covered in as many places as it is, is because we had the data and that is what put state insurance boards over the edge.

sure, but don't ever call nonbinary people "other." It's dehumanizing and othering. Demographics are best collected as Male/Female/[Text Box]

Text boxes are useless for statistical analysis; the whole point is to put people into buckets. As opposed to public profiles or gender fields meant to *specifically* refer to one person, which should always just be [Text Box] (with separate pronoun dropdown if applicable to UX).

Rationally, I see no problem being classified as "other". Emotionally, I understand what you mean. I'm not sure I know how to reconcile these two results.

Transmen given options M or FTM may answer either, correct? (Some ID not as FTM but as M). So how do you ask question(s) & capture 100% of transmen in a survey? That's the primary reason for the 2-step question (which is used by NCTE, UCSF COE, it's considered best practice).

I think the point here is that the intent was *probably* not to gather stats on trans users but a misguided attempt at including them. I think if you're really trying to count trans people, that should be a checkbox in a "do you identify as any of these minorities" style list.
