I bought some Kemono Friends sheet music and all was well until I got to this measure. What on Earth happened here? The spurious courtesy accidental, mixing dots and ties, forking off for the second line to notate the same exact thing. I... I think this is what they meant.pic.twitter.com/v8YkVdRjzd

The double notation is because the two verses don't quite use the same rhythm. (And yes, you're right about the ー being for syllable extension across notes.)

There you go. It's not 2 simultaneous voices with different rhythm, it's two verses with different rhythm. It's perfectly readable.

Wait. I just saw what he was talking about. They ARE the same rhythm. The smaller notes are the same as the larger ones -- dotted 8th, 16th tied to 8th, 8th. The spacing of the notes and lyrics makes it LOOK like they're supposed to be different.

Exactly. Admittedly the original vocalists didn't do the tightest job at that rhythm, but it was clearly intended/notated to be identical. Panned and remixed both verses: https://mrcn.st/t/japaripark_timing.mp3 … [yu bi o sot to ka] vs [yu me o ip pai ka]

If anything they diverged slightly on the sot|ip (which is notated identically), not the to|pai which is split. But that's just just the singers not quite being on time.
