Bitcoin consumes 4,000,000,000 W of power to process four transactions per second. A single Raspberry Pi with a database can do an order of magnitude more on 5W. Think about that next time you wonder if it's a good design.

And to all the inevitable "but decentralized but instant but global but whatever" repliers: if you think any of those require and are worth a NINE ORDER OF MAGNITUDE overhead, please never be an engineer.

I made a little diagram just to put things into perspective. This is how much energy Bitcoin uses compared to another globally distributed system.pic.twitter.com/XuVeCdn69y

yes that's unfortunate, but people are using their energy to mine bitcoin to make profits out of it. If half of bitcoin miners stopped now, the network would still work equally, just less decentralized, but using way less electricity :) what do you think about @monerocurrency ?

But it would still be limited to a few transactions per second. The problem is all the mining effort is for naught. The network isn't stronger or getting more capacity because of it. It's just an arms race for block rewards and transaction fees.

it still doesn't use as much as gold, they use only 4x more power to mine the same value in gold

I feel like the same diagram could be used to show how many processor cycles were required to do something 30 years ago vs. the smae something now

Six. Orders. Of. Magnitude. Keep telling yourself those differences account for that discrepancy.
