are there any decently capable FPGAs whose toolchains aren't godawful/painful? I have negligible programmable logic experience and IDK how best to get started with this.

https://github.com/SpinalHDL/VexRiscv … claims to use under half of the logic cells of an iCE40-HX8K. That's a 32-bit CPU/SoC. Not a particularly fast one, but still.
