disassembler people need to be schooled by compiler people imo

I mean... UX aside (which I'm sure is hell), it's not that difficult to make one better than current offerings.

well, why then? does no one competent try and write one? I don't want to spend the rest of my days maintaining a disassembler but there's no shortage of infosec people who could probably do that

If everyone else in infosec is anything like @fail0verflow, we started writing one (it even had collaborative editing and undo/redo!), then got bored and kept on using IDA anyway.

awww. Ilfak is famous for being hard to work with, no? I mean not that I would actually feel bad about pirating IDA personally, but the entire situation seems unfortunate, like having Windows dominate your field

I dunno, I keep an active license for IDA-linux. It's overpriced, but there's hardly a good alternative. It's one of those love-hate things. I do know a couple people who work or have worked at Hex-Rays though.

I don't think individuals can even buy IDA, can they? or did that get relaxed in the years that have passed?
