I'm pretty sure it was a fuck up with 512b sector emulation. You end up with a 4K sector that contains 8 copies of the *last* 512b virtual sector. Took me forever to diagnose (RAID mismatches). I *speculate* it happens when the SMART self-test overlaps an in-progress write.

Yeah, that fixed a *different* corruption issue. Not the one I'm talking about. Also, they released that update *without* bumping the revision number, making it impossible to tell updated drives apart.
