And then some script kiddie from 4chan with a GPU outs all the plaintexts, and/or sets up a Twitter bot to automate it. Be very, very careful with ad-hoc security "protocols" like this. Especially when your livelihood may be at stake.https://twitter.com/Dharlette/status/944183293653733376 …

No, because if you can use a Rainbow Table, then the *very specific threat* that using a hash instead of a plaintext name is trying to solve gets shifted onto the person who uses a Rainbow table to collate a list of abusers.

The extra scrutiny that is applied by mainstream media to the first person to report if they come forward as an individual instead of as a group large enough to be irrefutable. The kind of harassment that happens when the New York Times publishes your name.

And what makes you think using a hash shields you from that? Script kiddie from 4chan reverses it and you're still the first person to report. That you obfuscated the report is irrelevant. It's still a provable report. Nobody cares about the script kiddie.

You don't seem to be very willing to debate this with me. I just hope anyone that takes advice from you understands this is exactly what you mean and is aware of what could happen if someone reverses the hash. For their own sake. Unlike me, their life depends on it.
