Airline check-in luggage rules are such nonsense. Li-ion batteries are not allowed (short-circuit risk?), but devices containing Li-ion batteries are, but then mobile "batteries" aren't (but they're a power supply device, not a battery?), but a combo BT speaker+battery is OK.

where was this? i’ve been travelling for a year and a half with 300Wh of li-ion (including li-ion stand-alone batteries, albeit circuit protected) in my carry-on. i get some really amazing looks during xray but haven’t been questioned yet

Check-in, not carry-on. Carry-on is fine, though they have some per-battery Wh limits too (that unfortunately my biggest mobile battery exceeeds, though I haven't tried to see if it'll fly yet).
