You would only want class 1&2 lasers at the congress. The type you have in your laser pointer. Lab safety rules for theoretical physicists generally go like "don't go to the lab if the experimentalist is not there" and I'd say the same is true for computer scientists :-)
The hackcenter has always (until last year, anyway) had a number of people with laser projectors of various classes. It's part of the artistic culture; some people do LED arrays, others do lasers. It's fine as long as common sense is observed (i.e. above eye level and scanned).
