I've burned myself plenty of times with a soldering iron, but I've never did light anything on fire. and if I didn't it must be hard.
Same. At most I've blackened paper, but never a fire. That's what makes this extra ridiculous.

Concentration is the key here. Increase the number of participants and the probability of incidents increase as well. Go talk with fire security people.

The probability and manageability of incidents can be adjusted. I'll take rigorous enforcement of walkway clearance and density, and liberal provision of fire extinguishers, over an outright soldering ban any day.
