Switched my desktop to an AMD GPU and am much happier for it.
AMD open sources their Vulkan driver (and already uses open source kernel drivers). https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd-open-vulkan&num=1 … Meanwhile, Nvidia signs their firmware and refuses to release it so Nouveau can use it. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Nouveau-XDC2017 … Guess which GPU brand my next machine will be using.

Considering Vega’s timing put it closer to Volta than Pascal, I don’t take “it beats this year old mid-to-high range GPU with a 50% larger die” as a good sign :/

Unless you’re looking at it solely as a gaming card (in which case, why are you even using drivers not hand optimized to work around game’s hacks), the high end goes as high as Titan V/Xp. I’m a little bit pushing it but the 1080 isn’t really a top performer anymore

Titan V is a GV100 at 3k$, releases a few days ago. Looking at the size oft he die, Vega was betting on a much less aggressive Pascal and had to push a ridiculous, overclocked, die out in order to compete. It should be betting the 1080 Ti, not trading blows with the 1080.

This is all moot because AMD cards are 10 times faster than Nvidia on usable Linux systems, due to their refusal to release power management blobs to Nouveau. And no, their blob driver is not an option. It doesn't even work on most laptops in a usable way.

It’s absolutely high range for gaming. I’d argue it’s getting close to the mid/high range boundary when it comes to compute.

I may be cynical but I’d say that AMD’s openness isn’t born out of conviction but of being technologically late and needing to get any goodwill they can. Nvidia can support the CUDA ecosystem without going open source and AMD would do the same if they could get away with it

Nouveau works. I'm actually quite happy on my order card. *Much* better than the blob (performance and usability wise). But due to lack of reclocking on newer cards the performance is basically 2D/Intel level.
