why is cloud storage so expensive? 1TB for a year, for backup/cold data (meaning very high download fees): Amazon: $48 (Glacier) Google: $84 (Coldline) Backblaze: $60 (B2) shitty USB HDD: $50, x2 for redundancy, but it can last many years tape: like $10, but drive is $1600

I pay $240/yr for 16TB, but it'll soon be 40TB at the same price. But that's a server I own, I'm just paying for electricity :-)

You don't need to power your storage server all the time, I have a openwrt router in front which wakes it up from suspend to ram when it sees traffic for it.

It also runs a few actual server-y things though ;)
