This is my first time using satellite internet and my DNS queries are timing out on the first attempt due to the 660ms ping time. Thankfully I have a caching resolver...
Probably bufferbloat. Typically something like a VPN over a reliable transport like TCP with severe packet loss where it can't "keep up" with real traffic. The sudden drop was someone finally restarting it and dropping buffers.
