C should be your *second* language. Python (or similar) your first. Basic C is actually very easy to learn (as a language), but what you're *really* learning (the hard part) is how computers work. That comes after learning high-level concepts with a high-level language.
I found that processing does the job for absolute beginners. Having instant visual feedback is important. However the Java syntax is often confusing people (esp. the for loop and scope rules).
