Why does Spotify even try to use Widevine DRM? I can literally just open up Audacity and have it record bit-perfect digital audio off the PulseAudio monitor device. Two clicks. Why do they even bother?

Minimum implementation cost. They all know the analog hole exists and they can't prevent audio loopback recording, so why bother? As long as it requires real-time recording rather than just copying some files, it's effective enough.

Compare this with iTunes DRM, which downloads M4P files that can be decrypted and turned into M4A files instantly. No real-time ripping required. (or at least this used to be the case, I've been out of the Apple ecosystem for about 10 years now)

I actually don't think that would stand in a court of law. There was nothing to circumvent. It does not "effectively control access to a work".
