For example, the miners are doing about 12,000,000 GHps, which is completely exhausting every key in a 65-bit keyspace every hour. But it cost of 29 TW of electricity. If we assume 5 cents per KWh, that's a cool $50 million per hour to maintain that level of computing power.

But it isn't $50m per hour. Not even remotely close. At 12.50 BTC reward per 10 minutes, plus 1.2 BTC transaction fees, that equals $736k per hour. That is, by definition, the upper bound of the cost of Bitcoin mining. If it were higher nobody would be doing it.
