why does 先月 (sengetsu) mean (one) previous month but 先日 (senjitsu) doesn't mean (one) previous day?

hahaha I don't think it's specific to Japanese or any languages. Easy example for English is "a" is pronounced differently between standalone "a" (f.ex "a b c d") vs in indefinite article (f.ex "a book").
... sometimes. Depending on dialect reading the indefinite article 'a' as /eɪ/ is common.
