Some things are unlikely to wind up with good FOSS alternatives (and FOSS isn't a viable business model for them). Mostly more niche software. TBH I'm fine with propietary stuff as long as it follows open stds, supports my OSes and has no or unobtrusive DRM.

To be fair, those are few and far in between. I can think of Pianoteq for one. There's a lot of black magic in its bowels that would be very hard to replicate. It has DRM (3 computer max) but I know how to bypass it if I need to... and it supports open plugin standards.
