And it boots? All hardware works? Even random new USB toy?

He probably disabled USB support too. But with some Serial Driver(8250/1655), you can boot it/use it on Qemu :p

Yeah, it has serial support and that's pretty much it. No storage/block devices. Initramfs only. ACPI only because I need SMP. It's for Qemu.

No virtio drivers either. I literally have a serial port and that's it. I even disabled the PCI bus entirely. My kernel boot-time dmesg is barely longer than one screenful.

The time to the first kernel messages is barely 0.2s or less. It actually spends half a second or so bringing up the CPUs. With a single CPU it takes about 0.3s total from launching qemu to userspace, give or take.
