Just trashed four microUSB cables for excessive impedance. If it can't charge at >1A, I don't want it (extra long data cables: >500mA).

What happened? Did they get hot? Or even melted like a fuse? How “can’t charge” happened?
When the cable has too high resistance, the voltage drops and that limits the current to a lower value. It just charges more slowly.
