My strategy is buying chap microUSB cables more frequently. All cables wear, even the very expensive one.

Why do you have them in the first place? Chinese devices?
-
Random cables that come with random stuff tend to be very hit and miss. Even name brand devices come with terrible cables sometimes.

I assume you remember that story: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/225719-amazon-bans-cheap-usb-c-cables-in-wake-of-google-engineers-crusade …

Oh yes. I'll be testing the USB-C ones next.

Someone will make a cheap USB cable tester (impedance, etc) with "pass/fail".. ppl will cheap-clone it.. then need USB cable tester tester.

Can you tell me how to do it? Been wanting to do this for ages
-
I just plugged them into a known device (a half-empty Anker battery) through an in-line USB power meter. Nothing fancy.

What happened? Did they get hot? Or even melted like a fuse? How “can’t charge” happened?
-
When the cable has too high resistance, the voltage drops and that limits the current to a lower value. It just charges more slowly.
