Is it me, or is typeface design basically what we would call copyright infringement in other fields? Every font is based on some other font.

I'm sure the legalities are different (because historical reasons), but it's interesting to contrast with, say, the TV/film industry.

There are so many fonts in circulation that have simply been renamed or have the slightest alteration from the original. It’s a dying art.

IIUC, designs can't be copyrighted, just design patented. (computer font files are copyrightable though)
