I'm sure the legalities are different (because historical reasons), but it's interesting to contrast with, say, the TV/film industry.

Yes! So far, every letter I've seen in every font has been a recognizable copy of a letter in the alphabet! A child could see it!

Font copyrights are weird - you can trace over existing font to create a new one and use it legitimately.

Copyright in a scalable font applies to choice of placement of control points and grid-fitting programs (hints/instructions).
