apple did that because they were anal about details. Like me, they hate blurry or unaligned text.
Apple are actually using the least font hinting of any OS as far as I know. And once you have high enough DPI these problems *disappear*.
The current graphics world is like a cheap toy with 8kHz samples that doesn't sound muffled only because it aliases all over the spectrum.
