But what if the server only accepts tweets <=280 characters??

The problem is it accepts tweets with 280 Japanese characters. Which is not supposed to happen.

Which is bullshit tbh. Either make it available for all characters or none. That would be like excluding Ys.

Exactly. If Unicode contained ligatures for each possible pair of Cyrillic characters, would it be fair to count each as just one?

Æ œ ᵫ ß also count as a one character, despite being ligatures of ae, oe, ue, ſs/ſʒ. It is called character limit, not letter for a reason.

But no Western language is written *entirely* in ligatures like that. There's a reason why Unicode has a notion of double-width characters.

Heck, in Japanese text terminals Kanji and standard kana take twice the screen space as ASCII characters. In SJIS ASCII is 1 byte, kanji 2.

The Unicode notion of a "character" is not a good measure of screen real estate nor of information content. It shouldn't be used as such.

I still think it is stupid to intentionally exclude their characters. Make it globally, keep it at 140 or limit their space to 70 instead.

What's the difference between limiting CJK to 70 and doubling everything else to 280? The ratio remains the same.

People would have less space to type shit and thus are limited to limit themselves, just like they are now.

Except CJK users are already *not* limited. Making things worse for them is worse than making things better for everyone else.
