This is perfectly sensible and advantages/disadvantages no one and is not an arbitrary "fuck off, CJK". Wait, no... the opposite

this list is also used against user lang in the "getLanguageWeight" function (which seems to be UI-specific): ["ja", "zh-cn", "zh-tw", "ko"]

The first CJK block starts at U+1100 (4352) and we jokingly said "maybe they'll just start there" ಠ_ಠhttps://twitter.com/FakeUnicode/status/912809293195259909 …

Hangul starts at U+1100 and CJK ideographs extend to U+2FA1F. Not a lot of languages are outside this range. Mostly Latinate/Aramaic.

looks like they count code units (U+1100+ counting as 2) subtract from 280, /=2 if user's lang is CJK, and display that as the "countdown"

probably means astral emoji count as 4 in the web client (as they're counting UTF-16 units); not sure if that's different server-side still

you're right, it's even wackier than I thought: 1. match string against /[\uD800-\uDBFF][\uDC00-\uDFFF]/gm; each match counts as 1 character

I wonder if they intended to count those as 2 (or one per surrogate half) but somewhere someone had a brain fart.

What about the BMP emoji? Or do the kids only care about PNG.
