Today's "duh" moment: turns out you can use any switching buck converter as a voltage inverter by just swapping Vout and GND.

It's common ground. You treat Vout as GND on both sides. Converter must be capable of total (V+) - (V-) as Vin. https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/app-notes/index.mvp/id/3844 …

It's funny how voltage is relative but us humans can't make any sense of it once GND stops being GND :)
