I wonder why x86? Does your Dell switch support some fancy routing/filtering? What chipset are they using to implement the network ports?

I think these are all Broadcom based switching ICs. It does do L2/L3 modes. Then again every switch seems to run Linux/BSD these days...

Oh, it gets better. The newest OS release is actually Linux based, not NetBSD. Multi-OS switches!

Yeah. Pretty common these days but usually the CPU is PowerPC or ARM. First time I see x86.
