I guess yes. Once you've set the volume high enough, any app can produce sound that causes this to happen.
I once blew my Chromebook speakers simply by messing with the volume levels after unlocking root (without any sound coming out). Melted.

My only guess is either they were DC coupled and had a nonzero DC bias applied, or it was ultrasound. They fixed it in a kernel update.
