AMS security decided my bag was "too heavy", even after removing my laptop, and I had to empty it into a tray
I actually got through in one go this time, but only because I completely emptied the main compartment in advance & laid out the rest flat.

I *never* get through if I only remove my laptop(s). Ever.

I'm _usually_ fine at US airports just taking the laptop out (other contents include 3DS, tons of cables, and tons of li-ion packs+18650s)
