Did I mention I rewrote Microchip's PIC18 USB stack in assembler once? I think I'm still cursed from that.
Their paid compiler was garbage. I remember it having two modes, one where "16*16==0", one where a bit test compiled to 6 instructions.

(And getting the paid compiler for free wasn't hard; their "upgrader" would install if you created an .exe file of the right size!)

I actually wound up using SDCC for PIC18 at one point and that was way, way better than Microchip's C18.
