Thing is RFC1918 is usually reserved for end-user usage. I happen to have a dangerously close 172.17.0.0/16 net on this server internally.

There's no real downside to the double-NAT here, since all protocols are forwarded. And some minor upsides (e.g. insulation from IP changes)

I get the preference. Why couldn't you put the PPPoE client & creds in the initramfs?

I could, but that'd bloat my initramfs, and require retry scripts to ensure it stays connected, and complicate things.
