If you have a private web server on your LAN for use by visitors, what certificate should it use?
Use a real registered domain and get a real cert for it. Let's Encrypt supports DNS validation, no need to expose server to the internet.
If everyone with a home LAN needs to pay $15/yr for a registered domain, that's a huge windfall for registrars.
More like $8/y. Some of the cheapest TLDs are $1/y. Or you can use free subdomains.
Use free subdomains and end up rate limited because others have used the same subdomain. Or is Public Suffix List's add backlog cleared yet?
I dunno, I got a random domain I admin (that 3 times a year is a public suffix) added to the PSL easily enough ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
