A friend did something similar, but not nm-scale (just for decorative purposes). You kind of need a patterned surface for tracking though.

Yeah. I was thinking you'd start with wafers marked for tracking, lay out design radially.

Yeah, if you had a spiral groove marked on them like a blank disc, I could see that working (if the optics part works out).
