That's how some languages work. In Italian if something doesn't have a gender or is a mixed group is referred to as male.
The funny thing is when politicians overcorrect and make female forms out of genderless forms in Spanish

Spanish is heavily gendered, not completely. They seem to have trouble not seeing neutral words (e.g. judge "juez") as male for some reason.
