Used to be vorbis. The source for both is FLAC of course. The few things I have in vorbis/mp3 only don't get transcoded.

are claims of "higher quality" purely subjective? since i can barely tell the difference between vbr mp3 and flac

VBR depends on the V. Codec quality at a given bitrate is objectively measured with an ABX test. Test yourself and see :)

the only abx I've tried is http://abx.digitalfeed.net/ personally, and my conclusion was "i guess compression codecs are pretty good nowadays"

Well, that test is comparing lossless against 320kbps AAC. Yes, that's transparent to most people. I'm using 96kbps Opus.

that's fair. I think a mp3 at a bitrate like that would probably sound horrible.

Well, that site has a 96kbps MP3 test too and, well, let's just say that was predictable.pic.twitter.com/SS8Su0i4Bc

I failed the Spotify standard test though (oggenc -q 5). I was using oggenc -q 4 previously for my phone's music (slightly lower).

I'll probably try it later. I have a decent setup (schiit stack and he500) but I doubt I'll be able to either

I used a Focusrite Saffire interface and cheap (but quite decent) Superlux HD-668B headphones. Main issue might be ambient noise though.

These are semi-open and I've got A/C and computer fans running in this room, so that doesn't help pick out minor details.

Yeah my he500s are just open. Maybe I should try the test with my thx00s as well later
