      Used to be vorbis. The source for both is FLAC of course. The few things I have in vorbis/mp3 only don't get transcoded.

      are claims of "higher quality" purely subjective? since i can barely tell the difference between vbr mp3 and flac

      VBR depends on the V. Codec quality at a given bitrate is objectively measured with an ABX test. Test yourself and see :)

      the only abx I've tried is http://abx.digitalfeed.net/  personally, and my conclusion was "i guess compression codecs are pretty good nowadays"

      Well, that test is comparing lossless against 320kbps AAC. Yes, that's transparent to most people. I'm using 96kbps Opus.

          that's fair. I think a mp3 at a bitrate like that would probably sound horrible.
