As root I get 22MB/s... acceptable for USB2 transport. MTP is terrible, there aren't many other options...

my assumption would be yes. i would assume extended lengths of time with these speeds would be potentially damaging to the device

Adb has always been slow for me, root or not. About 5MB/s (but I still have an old Nexus 4).

22MB/s as root. But on a Nexus 4 you're probably limited by storage, not USB.
