It's a myth that water is a terrible idea for lithium-ion fires. Yes, it reacts, but a large amounts of water wins vs. a small battery.

The goal isn't to somehow stop the stored energy from being released, it's to dissipate it and stop everything else from catching fire.

Also the water-lithium reaction is mostly a problem with lithium *primary cells* (contain metallic lithium), not li-ion (do not).
