If it specifically happens on ireqt, it sounds like maaaybe they can fix it in a microcode update without killing performance?

What's the point of putting a workaround in the micocode when they already have one in the kernel?

Fixing it for all kernels, not just one. Also being able to run legacy software without exploding. One Fewer Erratum To Deal With.
