A nontechnical friend asked me to clarify so: I’m reading in the assumption that malware authors reverse engineer all patches to find bugs

The people who wrote WannaCry aren't the kind of people capable of writing a wraponized exploit out of the patch bindiff IMO.

In my mind it's a question of ease of access. Sure, competent malware authors will, but the NSA handed the exploit to *everyone*.

I wouldn't have been these guys, but someone, eventually. Maybe 6 months later, but not years.
