      I have no doubt WMF is pissing away money, but this post tries to correlate numbers of pages with bandwidth, which is ridiculous and dumb.

      He's got page view numbers too. It's still a ~10x page view growth factor vs. ~50x revenue growth factor, which is ridiculous.

      They're scaling a PHP+mysql site, I don't think they're in for an easy time. No doubt there's waste of money, but it's not all that dramatic

      They admit to having ridiculous amounts of technical debt. Not fixing that means the foundation is grossly mismanaged, technically.

      And I say this after having spent the last two months rewriting a PHP+MySQL site with 15 years of gross technical debt in Python+Postgres.

      Rewriting something on the scale of Wikipedia requires some really careful consideration, and I don't claim to know the specifics of it.

      Note how e.g. Facebook didn't rewrite their site either, they just built a whole lot of new tooling around it to polish the turd.
