Non-technical merits like those are actually critically important to acceptance of a free software project. They can make or break it.

They also result in downstream technical issues. E.g. grsecurity not being merged makes it often incompatible with out-of-tree modules.

The difference is that Linus can be an asshole at times but largely works with people; spender has managed to alienate half the community.
