Using hex editors directly on disks/vm disks is so common for me... I wish there were better tools for this.
I was actually using hexdump and dd on a disk image and... yeah, it's annoying.

To be fair, the only write action I did was copying one 256 byte block to a new location. The rest was figuring out how to get there.
