Apparently Mastodon is AGPLv3'd. That means it's not licensed under a Free Software license; the AGPL is an EULA (like the Windows EULA).
It matters because *legally* there is a *massive* difference, as well as philosophically. It's not a copyright license any more.

Legally, sure, I can see that (and I think AGPL is impractical for most projects for similar reasons as GPL).

But philosophically? It serves the same purpose - giving end users certain rights - in cases where end users don't run the code.

But it does so by *limiting* the rights of end users. It imposes usage conditions upon users. It violates Freedom 0 of Free Software.
