      If I had to guess, the thing with the Switch video output is it really wants to be connected to a USB-PD source before going into dock mode.

      The dock has a microcontroller connected to an internal USB2 port on the hub chip. Possibly used for power management?

      It would be interesting if it could output 720p (tablet GPU mode) over any old standard DisplayPort cable, but I guess it doesn't.

      Might be something they can add in a firmware update assuming the DP implementation is otherwise standard.

          Consider that they have a hub with firmware (i.e. uniquely idenfiable) and the dock is single-purpose. Why need a billboard?
