It's... complicated. You can tune for speed or quality. Lots of tunables. Best done empirically.
but basically corners are more expensive than smooth nodes, connected better than disjoint, and avoid needless detail.

I make no claim of my font being optimal :) but it depends on the angle and the settings. I consider small angles "smooth".
